5 Goal Setting Principles To Succeed At Anything

Can't figure out why you're not reaching your goals? Setting achievable goals using these 5 principles will give you the long-term success you have been looking for.

If you wish to obtain any success in your life, you first need to set goals. Without having goals for yourself, you may lack focus and direction in your life. Not solely do goals enable you to take control of your life, but they additionally provide you with the benchmarks for determining your success. Setting a goal is a method that begins with your careful thought of what you would like to attain and ends with you putting in the toil to achieve it. Here are 5 goal setting principles that will lead to much success.

Man Creating Smart Goals

1.) Set Goals That Inspire You

If you've got very little interest within the outcome of your goals, or they're irrelevant to the larger picture, your motivation to work on achieving them is going to be fairly low. Set goals associated with the high priorities in your life. It requires a commitment to attain your goals, therefore to ensure you reach success and avoid the pitfalls most people face, it's paramount to set specific goals that inspire you.

2.) Set smart Goals

For your goals to be powerful, they have to be smart. To increase your chances of success, your goals need to be:

  • Specific

  • Measurable

  • Attainable

  • Relevant

  • Time-Bound

If you've ever taken an improv class, then you know Specificity is the name of the game. It's hard to hit any target accurately if you don't know exactly what you're aiming at. Cut out the vagueness and be as detailed as possible with your goals.

In order to track your goals and to evaluate the path you are taking to hit them, you must set something in place to make them Measurable. This can be something as simple as setting dates or timeframes to hit said goals.

To have Attainable goals you should be realistic with yourself when you set them. Make sure you have the means to achieve what you are seeking out. I'm not saying make it easy on yourself by not going after hard goals. However, you want to set mini-goals within the main goal so you create victories along the way to keep you propelling forward.

If your goals aren't Relevant enough to you, rest assured they won't be a priority. Be sure you are truly connected to your goals. This connection makes you prioritize them higher on your to-do list.

Being Time-Bound goes without saying, although I'm saying it. Setting deadlines for your goal not only holds you accountable but it makes it easy to see if you're on track to reach your goal so you know when to celebrate. Think back to the week before your vacation. If you're like most of us, you had a set amount of work you needed to get done before you actually went on vacation. You had until the end of the week aka a time-limit on getting that work done. This is no different.

3.) Write Down Your Goals

Don't merely rely on your memory. When you physically write down your goal, it becomes real and tangible. It eliminates any probability that you simply will ignore it or forget about them. Make sure to frame your goal statement completely to help increase the rate of retention. Post your goals somewhere where you will see them daily. This works as a relentless reminder of what you would like to attain.

Tip: Set your goals as a screen saver on your phone or use a sticky note and place it on the rear view mirror in your car.

4.) Make an Action plan

Often, we have a tendency to get so focused on the end result of our goals, that we have a tendency to forget to create a plan of action for accomplishing them. Take the time to write down the individual steps that you will need to take to reach your goals. As you complete every level, cross it off so you'll be able to visually see the progress that you are making.

5.) Stick with It

Goal setting is a continuous activity, not just a means to an end. Keep yourself on course by setting reminders, and schedule regular blocks of your time to sit down and review your goals and progress. You want to make sure that the pertinence, necessity, and value stay high as you grind toward accomplishing your goals.

Just Remember

Setting goals are more than just saying you would like something to happen. to have success, you need to clearly define specifically what you would like, and understand why you even want it in the first place. Implement these 5 steps in all your goal setting endeavors and watch as you start achieving any goal you make for yourself.

Now that you are equipped with the tools to succeed, What is the first goal you are going to achieve?
